Paul Ince slams Manchester United for appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on permanent basis and suggests board already regret decision
Paul Ince has once again questioned Manchester United’s decision to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis after the Red Devils lost to local rivals City in Wednesday’s Manchester derby.Second-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane fired City back to the top of the Premier League and made it seven defeats from their last nine games for United.Solskjaer has found himself under fire just weeks after penning permanent terms with Man United1

The result also dealt a huge blow to United’s top four hopes, with the Red Devils three points behind fourth place Chelsea with three matches left to play. The Blues visit Old Trafford on Sunday for a fixture that will be vital in determining who claims the final Champions League qualification place.United’s incredible downturn in form has coincided with Solskjaer’s appointment as the club’s permanent manager, following the superb work he did in the position of caretaker. The former Red Devils striker signed a three-year deal with the club, but he’s already under serious pressure given just how poor results and performance levels have been since he put pen to paper. And Ince, who questioned Solskjaer’s appointment as caretaker, has again gone in hard on United for rushing to hire the 46-year-old – a decision he believes the board may already be regretting. Speaking to Paddy Power, Ince said: “Im looking at the club and the future really worries me. Theyre a long, long way from many teams. Why did those players perform so well when Ole came in and now theyre not?“Theres no character, no leadership, no desire, but the manager has to motivate the players too. These are the same players that were playing brilliantly a few weeks ago, so if theyre not feeling motivated its down to Ole to sort that.“I called it before he was made manager and got stick for it, but what I said was right. I want him to be successful, but I dont think hes capable of doing the job. Its a huge rebuilding job, and will the players want to come to Man United to play under him? Im not sure its different to the bigger names like Guardiola and Klopp.“The fact is, they shouldve waited until the end of the season before they gave him the permanent job. There was no rush to appoint him, but everyone got caught up in the euphoria and was thinking with their hearts rather than their heads.

  • Man United rant: Id be delighted if Pogba never plays for Man United again
“If you went to the board now and asked whether they shouldve given him the job I think we know what they would say.“Everyone jumped on the Ole bandwagon and now were seeing the repercussions. Zinedine Zidane was available at the time and Mauricio Pochettino has always been the right man to take them forward in my eyes. Whether Im wrong or right, Im entitled to my opinion.”Ince does admit Solskjaer is not solely to blame for United’s struggles, however. The former midfielder claims there are issues all throughout the club, with a rebuild of ‘rotting’ United needed from top to bottom. He added: “Man United have lost their identity and everything at the club seems to be in a mess. Yes, they might be profitable because thats what Ed Woodward cares about, but the club is a shambles.

“Ole needs help, which may come in the form of a director of football, but its hardly a surprise the team is in that state. The club has given Ashley Young a new contract, Phil Jones, and Anthony Martial. Its not easy to get rid of them now and youre lumbered with them based off the fact they played well for a few weeks.“Look at Martial right now, why would you give him a big contract?“Theres a big rebuild, and the club needs looking at from top to bottom. People say the fish rots from the head down and thats what were seeing at United.”
