Amateur cup final abandoned as Wymeswold Reserves walk off pitch after Linford Harris suffers alleged racist abuse
The Leicestershire & Rutland County FA has launched an investigation after the Saturday Vase Final was abandoned when players walked off the pitch after their team-mate was the target of alleged racist abuse.Wymeswold Reserves striker Linford Harris was sent off 12 minutes from the end of Wednesday’s match against Cosby UniteD Development, with a fan going on to abuse the forward. This reportedly led to a confrontation between the players and some of the crowd, before the Wymeswold players walked off the pitch in protest. The referee then abandoned the match. Harris took to social media after the match, writing on Twitter: “So sorry to witness and suffer such racism in this day and age, thanks everyone for the support. Appreciate everyone standing behind me. WE ARE ALL EQUAL. #SayNoToRacism.”The Leicestershire & Rutland County FA confirmed they are investigating the incident.A statement read: “We ask anyone who was present at the match to provide their observations by email to info@leicestershirefa.com.“Leicestershire & Rutland County FA will investigate all allegations related to this game and take the necessary discipline action. As this is now an ongoing investigation we will not be able to comment any further.”Cosby announced they will support the FA throughout the investigation, while condemning abuse the club received in relation to the abusive individual. They insist the individual is not a Cosby supporter.

“Following last nights abandonment, the club will support the FA in anyway possible,” the club said. “This club does not condone racism.“Comments/abuse made to the club overnight that the individual is a Cosby supporter are wide of the mark. Good luck to Wymeswold for the rest of the season.”This is the latest in a series of racist incidents which have occurred over the past season, with calls for serious action to be taken in the wake of England players being abused by Montenegro supporters during last month’s international break.A number of players, managers and pundits have since backed the decision for teams to walk off the pitch should players be racially abused.
