Dejan Lovren refuses to rule out Liverpool’s chances of going the Premier League season unbeaten ahead of Manchester City clash
Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes his side can go one better than reigning Premier League champions Manchester City and stay unbeaten for the rest of the league season. The Reds, who are unbeaten in 20 league games and hold a six-point lead at the top of the table, take on City at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night with a win putting them ten points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men and nine ahead of second-placed Tottenham.Lovren has been talking up his team’s chances ahead of the huge game4

The fixture comes almost a year to the day when City travelled to Anfield with their unbeaten record intact but Liverpool ended their hopes of becoming ‘Invincibles’ after securing a 4-3 win, however, the Citizens went on to secure the title with ease.City will be determined to do the same to Liverpool but their incentive is much greater as a win for them will breathe new life into the 2018/19 title race. And Lovren admitted he and his team-mates were wary of City’s threat for the game and the rest of the season but feels confident Liverpool are in with a chance of remaining unbeaten.Lovren told Sky Sports News:“There are always records to beat. Everything is possible when you believe and you work hard. “Of course, you need the luck to go your way also, but why not? It is a challenge for us and every player here.“Will it be possible? Let’s see at the end of the season.“They [Manchester City] are still here.“They may have dropped points but if you look at their performances on the pitch, how they’re playing and how many goals they are scoring, there is a reason our manager said they are one of the best in the world.Lovren and Liverpool won eight games in December to open up a six-point cushion at the top of the league4

“We played many times against them last year, they know us and we know them, so it will be a massive game, enjoyable to watch, enjoyable to play and lets see who will win.“Last year they were in our position and did it amazingly. Now we are in their position and we need to learn how they did it and finish the season well.“We couldn’t expect more than this, it’s a brilliant feeling. We need to enjoy every game and just concentrate on ourselves and hopefully we can see ourselves in the same position in five months.”After struggling to break into the first-team this season, as his first start only came in the reverse fixture at Anfield in October which finished goalless.Liverpool faced City at Anfield back in October where it finished 0-0, Riyad Mahrez missing a late penalty.4

However, since Joe Gomez sustained a fractured leg in December, Lovren has come roaring back into the set-up and has forged a great partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the back.Lovren took some stick for a comment he made during the World Cup where he claimed to be one of the best defenders in the world but the Croatian never stopped believing in his ability despite his lack of game time early in the campaign. He added:“When we knocked England out and qualified for the final, I had that moment in my head to say that because I felt like that.“When you looked at what I achieved in those two months with Liverpool getting to the final of the Champions League and getting to the final of the World Cup, there are not many who could say that.Lovren remains confident in his own ability4

“Everything depends on the momentum of where you are. I always try to be better than yesterday.”
